“Solid but Empty” is a series of hollow blown glass sculptures that follow and question the pursuit of the pioneers from the American Studio Glass Movement. Similar to these pioneers I use a diversity of forms in this body of work to express a variety of conditions, emotions and social behaviors. The sculptures have been pierced and stretched challenging the material structurally, the opposite of what blown glass naturally wants to do. This technique may cause the forms to collapse and fold on top of itself during the hot sculpting process.
Once the glass has annealed I then cold work the sculptures, and fill the negative spaces with concrete. I enjoy the dichotomy of the two materials; allow the concrete to act as a metaphor for the voids we all fill. The concrete is rigid, and a grey area of experiences that shape and mold to our organic personalities, the glass is strong enough to bare the void and acts as the vessel for the human experience. A harmony is created between the two in order to question the substance and structure of our society today.
